Retired Col. John W. “Jack” and Miriam Garrick Oliver recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

The two met Jan. 1, 1944, and were married 30 days later in Charleston, S.C., in a ceremony performed by the Rev. W.R. Pettigrew.

Mr. Oliver retired from the Air Force after 30 years of service and returned to Texas and built their home on their Texas GI farm east of Salado. He retired again after serving 12 years as a Bell County commissioner. Together they built their second home on the old Oliver Ranch near Belton.

The couple celebrated with a family dinner with their children, Dr. Sandra Kay Oliver Matthews and her husband, Dr. Wayne Matthews; son, John Lynn and his wife, Rory, of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and son, Pastor Robert Oliver and his wife, Anna, of Arlington.
