Five officers graduated from the Advanced Education in General Dentistry-2 Year Residency at a ceremony at Fort Hood on Friday morning.
They were Maj. Luc Langevin, Capt. Mike Mansell, Maj. Gary Stone, Capt. Eric Swenson and Capt. Georgios Vessiropoulos. Langevin is a member of the Canadian army.
The two-year residence provides postgraduate education through clinical and instructive training, according to information from Fort Hood's Dental Activity. The training allows graduates to "function independently wherever soldiers are deployed, but particularly in areas where specialty referral is not readily available." Upon graduation, the officers are comprehensive dentists and may be certified by the American Board of General Dentistry after several exams and a written treatment planning board.
The U.S. Army Dental Corps began providing postgraduate education in general dentistry at Fort Hood in 1962 with the establishment of the General Dentistry Residency Program. It was accredited by the council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association in 1963 and has been accredited ever since.
The Canadian army has partnered with the U.S. Army's dental program since 1973. Langevin is the 53rd Canadian graduate of the two-year residency.
Langevin will return to Canada and be assigned to the Dental Detachment in Valcartier, Quebec. Mansell's next assignment is with the 561st Medical Company (Dental Services) in Vilseck, Germany. Swenson's next assignment will be at the Fort Irwin, Calif., Dental Activity. Information for Stone and Vessiropoulos was not available.
Retired Col. David Reeves, a former mentor for the two-year residency program who currently has a private dental practice, told the graduates he felt like a divorced parent coming back to see the success of a children raised by others. Reeves served as a mentor from 2001 to 2006 and taught the five graduates.
He told the officers that the grass may be greener on the other side, but to enjoy the in-between times and find happiness in whatever phase of life they were in.
