Central Texas Area Veterans Advisory Committee (AVAC), in conjunction with local veterans’ organizations and the City of Killeen, will again be celebrating Veterans Day with a community-wide parade.
The parade starts at 11 a.m. on Nov. 10 from City Hall.
Parade line up will be along Avenue E. All participants must assemble for the parade no later than 10:30 a.m. Line-up will be as you enter the assembly area from North Fort Hood Street/FM 195. Parade slots will be assigned for special elements or bands.
All local businesses, clubs, civic, schools, and veteran’s organizations to participate in the parade as a tribute to all veterans who have stood tall in the defense of their nation.
First-place trophies will be awarded in the following categories: Best Marching Band; Best Marching Unit; and Best Float.
A 1st-, 2nd-, and 3rd-place plaque will be awarded in the Best Veteran’s Organization Unit/Float. This last category will also receive an award of $300, $200, and $100, respectively.
The Grand Marshal for the parade will be LaValla Blum, a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
Fort Hood will provide the Color Guards and other marching elements for the parade.
Beginning with Veterans Day 2006, the Department of Veterans Affairs launched the Veterans Pride campaign to promote veterans to wear their military medals on Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the Fourth of July. All veterans are asked to join in this campaign and show their pride and service to our Nation by wearing their military decorations and awards.
