A day after she was fired as Killeen’s finance director, Barbara Gonzales said she is not happy about the way she was treated by the city after years of hard work during turbulent times.

“It is disappointing to be treated in such a manner after dedication, hard work and commitment through the most difficult economic times,” Gonzales said in an email Thursday.

Gonzales and three other city employees ended their employment with the city of Killeen on Wednesday following a two-month internal investigation of the city’s Fleet Services Division, which handles the maintenance and repair of all city vehicles.

Along with Gonzales, fleet services technician John Acker was terminated. Fleet Services Director Kim Randall retired and fleet services technician David Riddle resigned.

City officials said the investigation found “mismanagement and misappropriation of city time and equipment.”

In her email to the Herald, Gonzales seemed relieved there is “closure” to the matter, but still voiced disappointment.

She said she was a dedicated worker during rough times, including a council recall and city management turnover. Furthermore, Gonzales said she worked hard to improve the city’s bond ratings.

Gonzales was appointed as finance director by former city manager Connie Green in 2007. She was placed on paid administrative leave Oct. 5 before being fired this week.
