Today could be the final day of jury selection for the accused Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan. The tally of jurors is as follows: 10 from last week, and possibly between three and six today. All are officers. If all three of yesterday's challenges are granted, the jury of 13 would consist of nine colonels, three lieutenant colonels and a major. But anything could happen.

The hearing starts at 9 a.m. All that appears to be on the docket today is presiding judge Col. Tara Osborn's ruling on three challenges posed by the prosecution yesterday. For a summary of that hearing read here

Meanwhile two murder trials started at the Bell County Justice Center yesterday.

One is the nearly 24-year-old murder case of Shellie Latham, who was stabbed to death in her home in Belton on Sept. 9, 1989. Police arrested Samuel Edward Baker, 45, after discovering DNA evidence that linked him to the scene of the crime. Previous coverage is available here. Hasan's former attorney, retired Col. John Galligan is representing Baker.

The second trial is another Belton murder. The defendant is Chance Deallen Keller, 26, who is accused of killing 20-year-old Steven Wright during a Feb. 25, 2012, robbery. Coverage of Keller's indictment can be read here.

Finally, my colleague Brian Bradley has a sad article about Killeen police officer Robert "Bobby" Hornsby. Hornsby died during a shootout Sunday at Grandon Manor Apartments. He is the first Killeen police officer killed in the line of duty in about 95 years. We are waiting for authorities to release the name of the shooter, who was also killed during the incident. I'm told his name will be released today. Neighbors have told the Herald he was an active duty soldier who recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan.
