I'm running a 5K Sept. 8 and I'm recruiting for it.
My skills have been successful so far, though probably questionable:
"You can have a fun-sized candy bar, but only if you promise to run a 5K with me on Sept. 8." It's amazing what my colleagues will pledge to do when staring down a Starburst. One even volunteered to do 50 push-ups!
But in all seriousness, I've recruited four colleagues (still working on a few others), and a couple friends from Killeen and Harker Heights. I might also have a couple driving from Austin to participate with us.
If you're medically able to join us, I think you should, and don't be intimidated by what might look like athleticism coming out of the newsroom.
I'll speak for myself and say in plain English: I am not an athlete. Up until about 6 weeks ago, I wasn't even running and joked that if I had to run for my life, I would die. That last part still might be true. But I'm committed to taking one small step at a time to improve my health and quality of life.
I also want to make it clear that I'm not a super health nut. Just last weekend did I binge on Wheat Thins and Friday night I ate a pint of ice cream. There, that's my confession - proof that sometimes Wheat Thins and ice cream is what's needed to cure life's ails. (not really, but you know what I mean).
It doesn't matter if you're a runner or a walker, if you're fit as a fiddle or, like me, have weight you want to slough off, getting healthy is about putting one foot in front of the other and making one choice at a time.
