When Fort Hood resident Narika Trim, 26, saw that a Citi Trends was moving into Killeen, she had one thought.

"It's about time," she said Tuesday, recalling her reaction as she perused clothes for her family at the new urban apparel store on Fort Hood Street.

Trim's shopped at other Citi Trends in Florida and Georgia, and has been waiting for one to come to town. Beyond having trendy, name-brand clothes for kids and adults, she said, "It's cheap."

San Antonio-based district manager Bob Perez said Citi Trends has also been waiting to move into Killeen.

"We've liked Killeen for a long time," he said. "We searched high and low for a location here."

Citi Trends is located near Kmart at 801 S. Fort Hood St.

The store opened Tuesday, but its official opening is Thursday.

Killeen's young demographic makes Citi Trends a retail fit, Perez said. "We've found a successful niche in urban apparel for the entire family."

Manager Maritza Wright has lived in Killeen for 27 years and believes Citi Trends will be successful here.

"We have a lot of young soldiers, a lot of young people, and there's a lot of diversity in Killeen," Wright said.

Once Savannah Wholesale and Allied Department Stores, with a history dating back to shortly after World War II, Citi Trends was launched in 2001. Based in Savannah, Ga., it has more than 460 stores in 27 states. The closest locations are in Austin and near Waco.

Its stylish clothes, sold at affordable prices, have enabled Citi Trends to grow at a rate of about 40 new stores each year, even as other retailers have struggled, Perez said.

Buying in large quantities from manufacturers allows the publicly-traded company to keep prices low, he said, adding that Citi Trends does little advertising, and relies on word of mouth to build its brand.

Robert Jordan, 63, has shopped at Citi Trends and in Florida and Louisiana and said he was glad a store has finally opened here.

"They've got the same stuff the mall's got," said the Killeen resident, "and it's a whole lot cheaper."

The store is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
