The Walgreens at U.S. Highway 190 and East Robertson Avenue in Copperas Cove will be open 24 hours starting April 1.

For now, the drug store only plans to open the front end for 24 hours. The pharmacy’s hours will remain 8 a.m to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

“The pharmacy may come later, but right now it is just the front end,” said store manager David Williamson.

Williamson said the change is a direct result of H-E-B relocating to the other end of Copperas Cove.

“Since Feb. 1, the day of the new H-E-B’s grand opening, we saw a big spike in sales, and it has not stopped since,” Williamson said.

He said the fact that CVS will soon be expanding into Copperas Cove did not influence the store’s decision to become a 24-hour operation.

“This has nothing to do with those guys,” he said.

Williamson declined to disclose how much sales have increased since Feb. 1. He credited the store’s location for the spike.

“It’s the convenience,” he said. “We’re easy in and easy out. H-E-B moved to the other side of town. A lot of customers would rather come here than go to the other side of town.”

Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Polo Enriquez said Walgreens’ recent success is indicative of the commercial potential of Copperas Cove’s west end.

“I think the west end of town from the old H-E-B site to all the way out of town is the most likely place for commercial entities moving in,” he said.

Enriquez said there is a “perceived long distance” between the west and east ends of town, which benefits businesses on the west end.

“But there really isn’t,” he said.
