CVS Pharmacy opened the door of a new location in Killeen this week, and was welcomed by military and nonmilitary customers alike.
The 13,000-square-foot retail store, located at the corner of Trimmier Road and U.S. Highway 190, opened Sunday and will operate 24 hours per day.
The store — the only CVS in Killeen — houses not only a pharmacy and photo lab, but also sells food, drinks, toys and other items. The location also has a drive-thru pharmacy.
The new store is located at one of Killeen’s busiest intersections and is directly across the street from competing retail pharmacy Walgreens.
Both stores are within sight of the H-E-B on Trimmier Road, which has its own pharmacy.
John Crutchfield, president of the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, said in August that CVS paid more than $4 million for the new store.
The Trimmier CVS stands on the lot of two former businesses, Midas and a Baymont Inn and Suites hotel. Both of those businesses were demolished to make way for the new store.
Despite being close to rival businesses, officials from the CVS corporate headquarters said the store’s location and high visibility would still make the branch profitable.
Competitors or no, the CVS on Trimmier is likely good news for military service members and their families. The location accepts TRICARE.
According to a Sept. 9 news release from the TRICARE website, Walgreens left the TRICARE retail pharmacy network when its contract with Express Scripts expired Dec. 31, 2011.
While Express Scripts and Walgreens announced a new network agreement July 19, 2012, Walgreens is still designated as a non-network pharmacy provider for TRICARE beneficiaries.
