Along with cooler temperatures, fall also means lower gas prices.

On Friday, the price of a gallon of regular gas at local stations ranged from $3.19 to $2.99 for members at Sam’s Club in Harker Heights.

For Killeen resident Jason Stevenson, falling gas prices are a welcome change from the higher cost of summer gasoline.

“It’s always nice to see the prices start to go down again,” said Stephenson,

35, a Killeen Independent School District employee.

“It’s a relief to see them drop.”

Stevenson was one of several residents who filled up at the H-E-B gas station on Trimmier, where regular gas was $3.05 on Friday.

“I definitely shop around to find out where I can get the cheapest gas,” said Stevenson, who uses the popular “GasBuddy” phone app to find the best prices.

Senior petroleum analyst Patrick DeHaan predicted gas prices in Killeen would likely continue to drop in the next few weeks.

“Historically, demand for gasoline goes up in the summer months, and decreases in fall and winter,” DeHaan said. “Due to EPA regulations, summer gas is also more expensive to produce.”

A lack of major tropical storms this year may have contributed to lower gas prices, which DeHaan said may fall as low as $2.90 before rising again.

The federal government shutdown could have limited impact on gas prices, he said.

“If it continues for a prolonged period of time, you might see prices drop,” DeHaan said. “Usually, when there’s an economic slowdown, prices drop, so the potential is there.”
