An H-E-B official confirmed the grocery chain wants to build a new store in Killeen.
The Texas-based company, which operates in more than 150 communities throughout the state, is in the process of locating a third property in Killeen, said Tamara Jones, an H-E-B spokeswoman.
“We are very interested in the Killeen-Fort Hood area, but nothing has been confirmed for a purchase,” Jones said. “As the community grows, we want to grow with it.”
Locating a site is often a lengthy process, Jones said. She didn’t know when the company would announce an official location.
The chain opened an H-E-B Plus in Copperas Cove in February 2013.
That store is more than 119,000 square feet and has about 270 employees, according to Herald reports.
It also anchors the Five Hills shopping center, a 127-acre retail development under construction, and replaced the company’s previous 44,000-square-foot facility in Cove.
The chain in recent years expanded its Killeen and Harker Heights locations by adding more floor space to the buildings’ footprints.
The store on Trimmier Road in Killeen was transformed into an H-E-B Plus. It offers electronics, more toys, video games and clothing.
H-E-B operates more than 340 stores and employs about 76,000 people.
