BELTON - Belton Public Works Director Les Hallbauer is turning 72 years young, but he has another reason to celebrate.

On Thursday, he was bestowed the 2010 Beltonian Award during the Belton Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet at the Cathedral Oaks Event Center.

The award is given to a person who has demonstrated a lifetime of service to the community.

Although he is a Kansas native, Hallbauer has spent most of his life in the Belton area.

He was described as a "behind-the-scenes person" who gets things done but doesn't necessarily take credit for the accomplishments.

His dedication to his job and as a volunteer was hailed during the banquet.

During his introduction it was noted, "You merely can look around our community and see that this individual does more than the expected, and leaves a little bit of themselves in any project that comes their way; special touches because of the pride and heart of this person."

As a Belton Rotary Club member, Hallbauer served in most capacities. He was named to the Rotary Hall of Fame and served as president.

But that wasn't his only tie to things "presidential."

He is a former recipient of the chamber's Chairman's Award for his assistance the year former President George Bush, who was then governor of Texas, attended the organization's parade.

Other honorees

Also earning honors were Trae Sutton, Citizen of the Year; JoAn and Doug Dillard, Ambassador of the Year; and SOS Leadership and founder Bill Moyers, the Chairman's Award of Excellence.

Moyer also was a guest speaker at the banquet.

Also during the event, the chamber's outgoing board chairman, Trae Sutton of Kasberg, Patrick and Associates, LP, handed over the gavel to the incumbent chairman, Susan Kamas of Workforce Solutions of Central Texas.

New board members Ben Pamplin, Heart of Texas Landscapes; Frank Minosky, Central Texas Workforce; Bradley Shepperd, HB Shepperd; and Joel Barryman, BBVA Compass Bank, also were introduced. Board members serve three-year terms.
