FORT HOOD — Workforce Solutions of Central Texas will be on post Thursday to connect veterans and their spouses with more than 50 employers.

Hiring Red, White and You! is a statewide initiative put on by the Texas Workforce Commission, 28 local workforce development boards and the Texas Veterans Commission.

Together, the groups organize numerous job fairs that take place throughout the state Thursday. Locally, one will occur at the Fort Hood Community Center, Clear Creek Road, Building 50012.

“This is designed to serve the veterans and their family members, and it is done around the state on the same day,” said Kimberly Patterson, Workforce Solutions of Central Texas business service manager. “The intent of the job fair is to connect veterans, their families and (soldiers) with jobs and businesses in Central Texas.”

Last year’s events attracted more than 12,000 veterans and 1,400 employers and resulted in about 2,800 new hires, said Laura Ybarra, with Texas Workforce Commission.

At Fort Hood, more than 650 people attended the job fair last year with more than 60 employers, and Workforce Solutions expects larger numbers this year, Patterson said.

The greater Killeen area is a great place to recruit workers, especially veterans, Patterson said.

“(Veterans) are a trained, ready to work workforce,” she said. “They know about working as a team member. They know about being to work earlier.”
