The Killeen-area unemployment rate continues to tick downward with a 0.4 percent drop in the number of jobless residents, the Texas Workforce Commission announced Friday.

The Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood unemployment rate came in at 7.1 percent for August, down from 7.5 percent in July. Last year, the area job market had a 7.6 percent jobless rate.

“Every major industry in Texas showed positive annual growth,” Andres Alcantar, TWC chairman, said Friday in a news release. “Texas employers added 274,700 jobs over the year.”

According to the report, those with the highest annual growth rates are mining and logging industries with a 1,900 increase in jobs, or 5.5 percent.

Professional and business services added 2,900 jobs since July and 58,200 since last year — a 4.1 percent yearly growth rate.

State rate falls

The state unemployment rate fell to 6.4 percent, down from 6.5 percent in July and 6.8 percent last year. Texas remains below the national unemployment rate of 7.3 percent.

“Texans continued to find jobs in education and health services industry, which added 6,700 jobs in August for a total of 39,700 jobs since last year,” said Hope Andrade, TWC commissioner representing employers. “Overall, the state’s private sector continued to grow nearly 3 percent annually.”

Killeen’s unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent in August, down from 8 percent in July and 8.2 percent a year ago.

In Harker Heights, unemployment was 6.7 percent in August, down from 7.0 percent in July. Copperas Cove was 7.1 percent, down from 7.7 percent.
