HARKER HEIGHTS — Dirty Harry’s is not just another bar on Veteran’s Memorial Highway in Harker Heights. It’s now the only smoke-free bar in the Central Texas area.

Raymond Hamden, owner of Dirty Harry’s, which opened two weeks ago, said the bar already has a huge following and is earning rave reviews from regular customers who appreciate the smoke-free environment.

“It kind of makes you feel good that you’re doing something good,” he said. “We are trying to set a trend. People come in and thank us for opening a smoke-free bar.” What started out as just a group of family and friends gathering together on weekends turned into a business adventure for Hamden, a Killeen resident.

He decided to open the bar so that people from all walks of life could have someplace to go to enjoy live music and mingle with friends.

“This is a community bar,” Hamden said. “What’s cool about the bar is that it’s a diverse crowd.”

With acoustic live bands playing every Wednesday night and shuffle board, which is proving to be a popular attraction, Dirty Harry’s is off to a good start. But Hamden is not done yet.

“We’ve not played all our cards yet,” he said. “We still have a few tricks up our sleeve.”

Hamden would like to continue as a pioneer in the community. “We want to lead the pack,” he said.

“We want to be innovative, coming up with new ideas to make the bar one of the, if not the, hottest night club in Killeen.”

Although the bar is smoke-free, Hamden said smokers are still welcome.

“There is a large patio in the back where all our smokers go to smoke,” he said.

This is really welcome addition. I belong to the Am. Legion and VFW and sometimes I would like to have a drink or play a game but the stench of the smoke is so bad. I was a smoker and have emphysema so I can't go to these places. Once you stop smoking you realize how bad you use to smell.

An address would be welcomed
