A new sign at the proposed location for the La Cascata multiuse retail center at U.S. Highway 190/Interstate 14 and East Stan Schlueter Loop is advertising parcels of land for sale or lease.

La Cascata Shopping Village, a 210-acre commercial and residential project with 355,000 square feet of retail space, is set to open this year, according the website for the The Retail Connection, the Dallas-based developer in charge of the project.

However, the project has been delayed because of a sluggish retail market, according to John Crutchfield, executive director of the Killeen Economic Development Corporation.

“The retail world is in a turmoil,” said Crutchfield on Aug. 11, pointing to store closings of national retail companies such as Kmart and others.

Crutchfield said The Retail Connection had secured other retailers — in addition to Tuesday Morning — to move into La Cascata, but some of them have already pulled out. And the developer won’t start construction until enough retailers promise to move in.
