Even during the “slow” hour, a line of customers snaked around registers Sunday at Goodwill, marking the last shopping day of Texas’ tax free weekend.

The three-day holiday created by state law exempted most clothing items, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced under $100 from sales tax, according to the Texas Comptroller’s website. Shoppers were able to save about $8 for every $100 they spent from Friday to Sunday.

“We saw quite a hit yesterday,” said Cindy Tribble, a store manager at Killeen’s Goodwill. “I know we’ve had a lot of clothes bought. ... There’s definitely been more families in this weekend.”

Perusing the store with her 9-year-old daughter, Sarai, and 14-year-old son, Weslenn, Vera Townsend thumbed through some back-to-school jeans at the store.

“I’ve worked for retail for so long, I usually don’t like shopping during these days, but we figured we’d get out because of the occasion,” Vera Townsend said.

The “occasion” Townsend was referring to was Sarai’s and Weslenn’s growth spurts. Before hitting up the mall, the family went to Goodwill because Sarai’s “all-legs” frame was outgrowing jeans like wildfire, her mother said.

New entrepreneurs Edwina Turner and her husband, Anthony, also said they’d seen an uptick in their businesses, with a few more customers stopping in during the shopping holiday.

Edwina Turner, who runs Turner Video Systems, and Anthony Turner, who runs Turner Appliance Installation, said they were taking advantage of the holiday as well, buying discounted items for work.

While families piled up backpacks and clothes at the nearby Harker Heights Target, however, Davina Simmons crept out with her small single-bagged purchase.

“Tax free weekend seems good, if you know about it,” she said with a smile. “But sometimes, you’re just shopping on the weekend to shop.”
