Metroplex Health System announced Friday Maria Talamo, is the hospital’s new interimfirector of behavioral health.

Talamo will be responsible for providing interim leadership, consulting and strategic planning. Her responsibilities also include economic and clinical program development services for the center’s adult, adolescent and children’s programs.

Talamo said she was brought on as interim director because Metroplex “needed a seasoned leader right away.”

Before signing on at Metroplex, Talamo served as chief nursing officer and operations officer at Austin Recovery in Austin, CEO and CNO at Lakeside Hospital in Bastrop and CEO of Austin Lakes Hospital in Austin.

“Behavioral health needed an experienced psychiatric hospital leader,” she said. “I’ve had psychiatric units reporting to me for decades.”

Metroplex Behavioral Health Services is a 60-bed licensed psychiatric facility that offers outpatient and partial hospitalization programs. Talamo thinks there is room to grow.

“It’s going to be an interesting process,” she said. “This facility has a lot of potential.”

She added there is a chance it could become a permanent position.

“This could offer me the opportunity to be the full-time director down the road, and I might be interested down the road,” she said.
