Metroplex Hospital and the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce on Thursday held an open house and ribbon-cutting for the expanded operations of the Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.

“This has been a partnership since 2009,” said Carlyle Walton, CEO of Metroplex Health System. “It is one of the proudest partnerships.”

Doctors at the wound care center started treating people in 2009 when the facility opened with the help of Healogics, the nation’s largest provider of advanced wound care services.

Since then, the center has treated about 2,800 patients, and in July, it doubled its space from about 4,000 to 8,000 square feet, increasing the center’s ability to treat people.

“We were already busting at the seams, so this is going to allow us to service more patients,” said Sonnet Perkins, director of the center.

Before the expansion, the facility had gone from one hyperbaric chamber to four, said Dr. H. Sprague Taveau, medical director of the center. In recent months, a fifth chamber was added and two new technologies that would allow the center to treat long-term wounds better and faster.

The added space also will allow for three additional hyperbaric chambers to be purchased, Taveau said.

About 45 patients can be served per day because of the expansion, Perkins said. The center could only serve about 30 before the expansion.

The center received a Center of Distinction Award and the Dr. Robert A. Warriener III Award from Healogics during a ceremony at the open house.

Doctors at the center achieved outstanding patient outcomes for 12 consecutive months, including patient satisfaction of more than 92 percent and a 91 percent wound healing rate within 30 median days to heal.

The center treats nonhealing surgical wounds, diabetic ulcers, pressure ulcers and venous stasis ulcers.
