Navy Federal Credit Union is opening a third Central Texas location in Killeen this year and preparing a fourth location.

A Dec. 3 opening date is scheduled for the full-service credit union facility at 3210 E. Central Texas Expressway, Suite 404.

The financial institution has a piece of property in the 700 block of West Central Texas Expressway with signs stating a new facility is coming to the site soon.

The growth is on the heels of a second Central Texas location opening in Copperas Cove’s Five Hills shopping center in October.

“The bottom line is, it is based on the number of members we have in the market,” said Michele Foster, a regional manager with the military-based credit union.

“We are serious about servicing our members, and when the need is there, we try to anticipate that need before it happens.”

Central Texas expansion

Opening its first location in Harker Heights at Market Heights in 2009, the credit union’s membership has grown in the Central Texas market.

“Our member count in 2009, when we initially entered the Killeen market, was just over 3,000,” said Raleigh Miller, a Navy Federal spokesperson. “We now have over 20,000 members in the greater Killeen area.”

Foster said with the Temple and Belton areas, there are about 24,000 members.

“At the end of the day, we have grown in a wonderful rate, and we have seen the need for (the East Central Texas Expressway) location,” Foster said.

The third location will provide credit union members in Killeen a location closer to home, she said.

“This is a way to close that gap of having that third location there.”

Reasons for growth

Foster attributed the growth to Central Texas’ military population and the state’s economic atmosphere.

“Texas is a wonderful economic place to retire, and it definitely supports the military,” she said.

Operations at the East Central Expressway location will be similar to the Harker Heights and Copperas Cove branches and provide loan, mortgage, checking, savings and other services.

The branch will be open from 9:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
