COPPERAS COVE — Baylor Scott & White on Thursday gave area residents a tour of its newest clinic at 239 W. U.S. Highway 190, which is set to open Monday.

“Back in October, this was just an empty lot,” said Dr. Karen Harrison. “Today, it marks the beginning of a new era in health care in Copperas Cove.”

Drs. Karen and Raymond Harrison, who practiced at and owned Harrison and Harrison Internal Medicine in Copperas Cove for several years, will manage the Baylor Scott & White clinic.

The new facility is the first Baylor Scott & White medical clinic in Copperas Cove. It is 14,973 square feet and features 24 exam rooms, two treatment rooms, an X-ray machine and offers laboratory services.

Being in a large space and becoming part of Baylor Scott & White will improve the Harrisons’ former practice, Raymond Harrison said. It will allow their patients better access to care with more resources.

Copperas Cove residents will no longer have to drive out of the city for a medical care or a service such as lab work, Karen Harrison said.

Copperas Cove residents Tom and Cindy Foster have made such trips for clinical visits for the last 10 years, they said. The closest clinic is a 30-minute drive to Clear Creek Road in Killeen, and before that, it was Willow Springs Road, Tom Foster said. Now it is just a mile away.

“We were excited to hear that it was being built here in Copperas Cove,” he said.

The family probably will start seeing the Harrisons at the clinic after they schedule their next appointment.

Once the clinic opens, Baylor Scott & White will search to fill more primary-care provider positions with physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.

There is room at the facility for eight health care providers.

The Harrisons and the Cove clinic are great additions to the Baylor Scott & White family, said Dr. Michael Reis, chief medical officer, Baylor Scott & White Health-Central Region clinics. Together they will help serve Central Texas’ health care needs.

“It is the first time we came out this far west,” Reis said. “The way we feel at Baylor Scott & White is that we are here for you.”
