In the Spotlight

Jesse Henderson

Jesse Henderson, 44, is a photographer who lives and works in Harker Heights.

What do you like about living and working in Harker Heights?

I like that the cost of living is cheaper. I live by the lake and we have great neighbors. This is a military town and I enjoy that atmosphere. This area is small; however, you’re close to a big city.

How long have you been in the business?

I have been a photographer for over 30 years, but I started being a sports photographer 10 years ago. I didn’t have any plans on doing sports photography at all. I would go to a sporting event with my children and people who knew I was a photographer would ask me why I didn’t take sports photos. I remembered growing up at home and my dad always had this one particular sports photo on his wall. Wherever we moved that photo would always follow. I want every child to have that good quality sport photo that will follow them wherever they go through the years.

Tell me about your family.

We are a military family. I have a wife, Yennhi, and two children, Jesse IV, 10, and Lindsey, 8. We moved here in 1997 with the military, then we left, came back and left again. I retired in Washington D.C., then we moved back here again in 2012 and have been here ever since. We like the area so we decided to make it our home. My wife and I are originally from Southern California.

What was the best advice you ever received?

The best advice I was ever given was from my parents, who would always say, “Do your best; if you’re not going to do your best, then don’t even do it.”

What is the last book you read?

I read several books a day thanks to Safari Books online. I read a lot of business and art books. I definitely read the Bible everyday.

If you could change one thing about Harker Heights what would it be?

I would change the current traffic situation. There a lot of places that you can only turn left when you want to go right.

If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?

I would eat less junk food.

Where do you see yourself in the next 10 years?

I see myself as a very established artist in the Central Texas area.
