Seminar on data privacy offered

Posted

The Central Texas Business Resource Center will host a lunch break seminar on data privacy and risk management at noon Thursday at 300 Cheyenne Drive, Killeen.

The seminar is for any business that collects data from its customers or employees, said Aimeé Nesse, a business counselor with the center. Presenters also will discuss risk management for businesses, and how owners and managers should prepare for disasters and other issues.

“Small businesses are not necessarily exposed to the requirements that they need to know (about data management),” said Meredith Armstrong, with M.A. Armstrong Law Firm PLLC.

“Some small businesses don’t even know that there are requirements out there.”

Armstrong, an attorney who specializes in business law, estate planning, contract drafting and review and data privacy, will be the seminar’s presenter.

Some businesses collect a wide range of data on customers and employees, including credit card information, Social Security numbers and driver’s license information, Armstrong said.

The seminar will cover how to handle such information to protect the business, customers and employees.

“I wouldn’t call it the advanced course,” Armstrong said. “It is more of the introduction on where to start.”

Leah McGee, of Leah McGee State Farm in Killeen, also will be a featured speaker.

Since the seminar is taking place during the lunch hour, the Central Texas Business Resource Center requested attendees bring their own lunches and to register in advance.
