Construction is underway on two strip shopping centers in Harker Heights.

Stefek and Sears, a Killeen-based general contractor, began moving dirt to create a detention pond on the future site of the tentatively named Synergy Center at 560. A 15,000-square-foot building will be built at 560 E. Central Texas Expressway and is being leased by Jim Wright Company.

As of Friday morning, the contractor was still in the process of getting a building permit for the estimated $3 million structure, said Jim Wright, owner of Jim Wright Company.

“It is going to be a nice center,” he said. “There are a lot of reasons for the center to go there. There is a lot of demand in Harker Heights on the expressway. It is across from Market Heights.”

In another development, Georgetown-based Embree Construction is building a 12,800-square-foot strip shopping center at 200 E. Central Texas Expressway for Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate

Construction on the $1.15 million building began in December, according to a Harker Heights permit report.

Mattress Firm will fill the majority of the space, with 4,574 square feet left for retail or restaurant space, according to Endeavor’s website. Another 1.5 acres also is available on the site.

At least one tenant has already claimed 40 percent of the Synergy Center space, Wright said.

“As soon as we start casting a shadow, it will probably fill pretty quickly,” he said.

Wright said he hopes the center will be ready by July.

Endeavor representatives were not available Friday to give an estimated completion date.
