The Herald recently sat down with Alishia Gordon, co-owner of an Original Fried Pie Shop franchise in Killeen.
Briefly describe the business.
We sell a variety of fresh pies made daily from scratch.
How did the business get started?
My husband (co-owner Charles Gordon) stopped and ate at the location in Hillsboro. They were really nice, fresh handmade pies like my auntie used to make. It was just a really good product and atmosphere. We thought it would be a great thing to bring to Killeen that we didn't have here.
How long has your location been open, and how is it doing?
The location opened on Jan. 12 and so far, it's doing really well.
What is your most popular product right now, and what else do you offer?
We have fruit, cream and meat pies. The most popular of the fruit pies is the apple pies. Pecan is the most popular cream pie, and the chicken-and-veggie pie is the most popular of the meat pies. The shell is handmade, made right in front of the customer as they wait. We fry our pies in 100 percent peanut oil.
Describe your typical customers.
It's a good mix. We get some people who stop by for gas (at the CEFCO next door) and come by out of curiosity because they smell the pies. Some come in for lunch and dinner. We have a pretty good dinner crowd.
What are your business goals?
We'd like to bring a few more (franchises) to the area. We're looking at Copperas Cove, Belton, places like that. But for right now, we're working hard to grow and market the brand, so we focus on the marketing and branding. We've recently run a radio commercial, and we want to do a television commercial, also.
