A familiar Killeen business is getting a new home.
The Cigar Box officially moved to 1401 E. Central Texas Expressway on May 1. Owner Bill Lusk said the decision to relocate was the culmination of several factors.
"I needed more space, and I needed to be in a stand-alone building," he said. "It was time to move."
Lusk's shop, which sells cigars, imported cigarettes, smoking accessories and more, was formerly in a small strip mall along W.S. Young Drive near the busy entrance to Lowe's Boulevard.
Lusk said one immediate benefit of the new location is visibility. Customers traveling on U.S. Highway 190 now can see The Cigar Box sign.
Inside, they'll find some improvements.
"The store is twice as big," he said. "The cigar lounge is four times as big. There's a lot more cigars because the humidor is bigger."
After 16 years in the same building, moving a familiar location with a strong loyal customer base can be tricky, but Lusk said his customers have welcomed the change.
"I have customers who've been with me since day one," said Lusk. "They're very excited about (the move). Everybody walks in and their eyes get huge."
More changes are pending. "We're still adding some new furniture," said Lusk. The free cigar lounge, featuring a big screen television, will soon get accommodations for more seating.
As for advice for other long-standing businesses looking to move into new digs, Lusk said savvy business owners should have plenty of capital to facilitate the move and budget long in advance.
"Make sure you have the cash for build outs and remodeling," he said. "And you need to have operational cash to sustain (the business) when you move, because people have to find you."
