The Cove Herald

The elementary school students of Copperas Cove are helping to beautify the city in more ways than one.

On sale starting this month, the Keep Copperas Cove Beautiful calendar features the artwork of 13 poster contest winners in kindergarten to 5th grade. The calendars cost $5, and all proceeds go toward funding future KCCB projects.

The poster contest, which was held in November 2006, prompted the young artists to draw what they feel makes Copperas Cove beautiful. The artwork depicted a range of responses, including trees, flowers, houses and various city landmarks.

“Cove is beautiful because a lot of people live here,” wrote Cheyenne George, Hettie Halsted Elementary School second grader, on the artwork for January.

“What makes Copperas Cove beautiful is the City Park,” wrote Joseph Cole, Hollie Parsons Elementary School second grader, on his poster of the fish pond, swimming pool and athletic fields.

Out of 18 entries, 13 posters were chosen, one for the cover and one for each month beginning with August 2007 and going through July 2008 to correspond to the academic year.

“We thought that people would be more interested because of all the school kids around. It would be more consumer-friendly and be more useful tool,” KCCB Executive Director Silvia Rhoads said.

The calendar includes important dates for the school year, including the dates for vacations, early dismissals and progress report and report card distribution.

KCCB also partnered with the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Association to list dates for their community-wide events.

The calendars can be purchased at the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, the Utility Administration Building and the Solid Waste Department and will be available until supply runs out.

KCCB will hold a special workshop on Aug. 22 to discuss plans for the upcoming year. Priorites include assisting with downtown revitalization, promoting the greenspace ordinance and funding grants for local businesses. KCCB also funds various beautification projects throughout the year, including several Eagle Scout projects in Copperas Cove.
