Candidates Kenn Smith and Gary Kent spent the most to campaign for the May 8 Copperas Cove city council elections while some spent nothing at all.

According to campaign finance reports filed with the Texas Ethics Commission, which is responsible for the monitoring of political contributions, expenditures and advertising, the six candidates for Places 3, 4 and 5 spent a combined $3,445.11 for advertising, signage and gas mileage one candidate recieved the only contributing reported .

Smith, retired Air Force Master Sgt., Navy educator and

candidate for Place 5, spent a total of $1,810.22 in personal funds for campaign signage and newspaper advertisements. He did not report any political contributions.

Fort Hood Facilities Manager Gary Kent, who is running for Place 3, reported the second highest expenditures, totaling $1,025.09 in signage. He reported the only political contributions - $300, which he said Wednesday were six $50 donations from family members.

Army veteran and retired realtor Mark E. Peterson reported $566.80 spent for signage and no contributions. He served on the council from July 2007 to November 2008.

The reports show Place 5 candidate John Gallen, 17-year special education teacher at Copperas Cove High School and current Planning and Zoning Commission Chair, spent $43 in gas

mileage. He served two terms on the city council from 2001 to 2007 and is the current chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The final two candidates - current Place 4 Councilman Danny Palmer and Place 3 hopeful R. Ray Gatewood - reported no contributions or expenditures.

Palmer is a 31-year Army veteran and is serving his second consecutive term on the council. Gatewood, pastor at Bethesda Fellowship Ministries of 12 years, served on the council from June 2004 to May 2007.
