Robert Gorton, a Copperas Cove resident, was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison.

He was charged with three counts of Indecency with a Child by Sexual Contact and Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child, which was later reduced to Injury to a Child — he confessed on Aug. 31, according to a Coryell County Crime Victims’ Office release.

The charges were for the sexual assault of the 12-year-old friend of Gorton’s daughter, who spent the night at Gorton’s home in 2006.

Gorton requested that his ruling be suspended for one month to get his family settled in another state, but District Judge Phillip Zeigler sentenced Gorton on one charge of Indecency with a Child by Sexual Contact, placing Gorton on 10 years deferred adjudication. The deferred sentence will be served concurrently with the prison sentence, meaning that Gorton will still be on probation if he’s paroled before the end of his 10 years in jail.

According to the release, the victim’s mother spoke to Gorton after the sentencing:

“Somewhere in our hearts we must learn to forgive you, or we will never be able to truly move one. I’m not there yet and only want awful things for you still, but in the end you will answer to a much larger judge — one with an eternal verdict — one that cannot be overturned.

“I hope it was worth it.”

Gorton has waived his right to an appeal.

The Crime Victims’ Office reports that the county has had 67 sexual assault of a child cases that were investigated by law enforcement.
