Twenty students will start creating the foundation for the city's first Youth Advisory Council at its introductory meeting in early April.

"The next thing would be for them to develop their bylaws," said Andy Cedillo director of parks and recreation who organized the group. "We want them to lead once they set up their bylaws and into the future they will go."

At the meeting, group members will learn about advising the City Council about programs and regulations affecting the community's teens and children.

"We want this board to send us in a direction," said Cedillo. "We want them to be a stand-alone board that makes their decision and that is a professional board that gives their opinion of what is going on in public service."

Bradi Diaz, who is the adult liaison for the youth group, is looking forward to the students' ideas. "The kids ... are such a dynamic group of individuals," she said. "I know they will be able to reach their goals, and I am very excited to work with them at any capacity, actually."

Diaz, a former city mayor and council member, is the president of the Copperas Cove Education Foundation and a board member of the Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation.

When she heard about the youth council, Diaz said she volunteered for the council-appointed adult liaison position.

"I just thought it would be something that would help with our city," she said. "It is something that is new, and I thought it would be something that would be very advantageous to our school district, our city, and our kids so I wanted to get involved with it."

Diaz and Cedillo said they expect the youth group will really take off after its first couple of meetings.

Youth members will spend the summer determining term limits, organizational structure and the events the group will become involved in, said Cedillo. "When we come back in August, they can hit the ground running."
