GATESVILLE — The Coryell County Jail received praise at Monday’s Coryell County Commissioners Court meeting.

After the jail’s annual jail inspection on Dec. 11, the facility was commended by a Texas Commission on Jail Standards inspector.

County Judge John Firth said the training and compliance standards evaluation exceeded all requirements and the inspector was so impressed with their training program that a copy of the program was taken to be used as a model for other counties.

“Considering that 32 county jails are noncompliant and 17 county jails are closed around the state for failure to meet standards,” Firth added thanking Sheriff Johnny Burks, Chief Deputy Joe Blakely, Lt. Kenneth Green and jail staff.

The jail will also promote a jailer to corporal supervisor to accommodate the shift changes at the jail, which will include an $800 per year raise.

In other news, the court appointed Firth to the Killeen-Temple Urban Transportation Study Technical Committee and Policy Board.

K-TUTS is the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Central Texas area.

Urban areas in the state are broken down into MPOs.

According to Firth, the MPOs are responsible for comprehensive transportation planning for their MPO area.

“K-TUTS supports transportation infrastructure from Temple through Copperas Cove and a little bit into Lampasas County. The importance of this is this is a separate political subdivision.

The board works directly with the governor and provides study recommendations to the Texas Department of Transportation for any transportation projects for planning in the future,” Firth said.

Firth said he will serve on the committee with Copperas Cove City Manager Andrea Gardner.
