Copperas Cove residents elected former Coryell County Judge John Hull the city’s next mayor.

Hull defeated the city’s former mayor, Roger O’Dwyer, garnering 4,186 votes to O’Dwyer’s 3,512.

“I’m glad it’s over,” Hull said.

Hull then thanked those who helped with his campaign, his supporters and those who helped get him elected.

O’Dwyer also wanted to thank the voters who supported him.

“I commend O’Dwyer for running a clean race,” Hull said. “It was a clean campaign.”

Following the City Council’s ousting of O’Dwyer from the mayor’s post, Hull put his name in the hat for the position in August.

O’Dwyer was removed from office by a 6-1 vote during an administrative hearing in March. He was charged with five counts of charter violations. O’Dwyer has denied any violation of the city’s charter.

According to O’Dwyer, a memo from then-city attorney James Thompson states O’Dwyer began violating the city charter in May 2006.

Both Copperas Cove mayoral candidates said they wanted the best for the city and to move forward.

Hull spent 47 years in public service, which included 12 years as Coryell County judge, eight years as a Coryell County commissioner, 20 years on the Copperas Cove Independent School District board of trustees, three years on the City Council and four years as a trustee for the now-defunct Coryell County School Board.

Hull said his goal for the city is to “get the city, council and staff working together for the city.”
