Killeen police evacuated three neighborhood blocks and locked down a nearby school Wednesday after a family in the 1300 block of Alta Mira Drive received a bomb threat from a caller. A search of the area revealed no explosives.

The 1300 and 1400 blocks of Alta Mira Drive and the 1300 block of Redondo Drive were evacuated as a safety precaution, Killeen Police Department Capt. Margaret Young said.

The Killeen Independent School District externally locked down Fowler Elementary School, which is only a couple of blocks away from the home, KISD spokeswoman Leslie Gilmore said.

At about noon Wednesday, officers were dispatched to the scene in reference to the bomb threat, a KPD news release stated.

Officers arriving on the scene met with residents who told the officers a male called and said he was going to detonate an explosive device at their home.

KPD then deployed its bomb K-9 unit, while officers evacuated all residents in the area and notified the Killeen Independent School District.

The unit searched the area but discovered no evidence of explosives at or around the home.

After about an hour, residents were allowed to re-enter their homes, Young said.

As part of the external lockdown at Fowler Elementary, no students were allowed outside and the building's doors were locked, but normal operations continued, Gilmore said.

"Our KISD police were working with the KPD, and we were given the all-clear after 25 minutes," Gilmore said.

KPD is continuing to investigate the incident, Young said.
