The Lampasas City Council awarded the bid for the first phase of the Lampasas Regional Sports Complex on Farm-to-Market Road 580 West to SWA Construction in Waco for $1,817,700, at Monday night's meeting. This was the second bid for the project after all original bids received in May exceeded the project budget. Specifications were changed to include the minimum facilities and meet the qualifications of a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department grant.
The approval authorized the staff to continue negotiations with the contractor to further reduce costs.
A Special Usage Permit, requested by property owner James H. Finley, to allow a tire dealership at 101 N. Key, was approved by the board after a public hearing. The retail-zoned location was previously occupied by Lampasas Rentals and Hardware. The motion passed with the condition that the business owners construct a privacy fence to entirely enclose the tire storage area.
In other business, a motion was approved to reappoint board members for the Lampasas Economic Development Corporation whose terms expire in 2009. Reappointed members include John Cole, Robert Reed, Steve Hudson and Sally Yancy. New terms will expire in 2011.
The council opted to hold budget workshops during the first two weeks of August. Workshops are scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1 p.m. on Aug. 4, 6, 11 and 13.
Mayor Judith Hetherly commented on the Summer Nutrition Program that will conclude this month. She complimented the school district for taking on the program and the staff at Hanna Springs Intermediate School for their participation.
