After spending two months in a Washington jail, a former Copperas Cove resident was extradited back to Coryell County Oct. 23 and indicted three days later on capital murder charges in the 2005 death of his infant daughter.
Joseph Allsop was arrested in Pierce County Washington Aug. 27 on charges of capital murder after an investigation into his past was initiated by his now 8-year-old stepson who told the Guadalupe County Sheriff's Department that Allsop had touched his genitals.
Allsop was stationed in Washington at Fort Lewis and GCSD Investigator Scott Humphrey requested that Allsop be questioned by a special agent assigned to the Army's Criminal Investigations Division.
Allsop was questioned Aug. 17 and confessed in a 12-page letter that he performed sexual acts on his 5-month-old daughter the night of Jan. 27, 2005. According to a complaint filed Aug. 20 in Coryell County Justice of the Peace Judge John Guinn's office, Allsop confessed to sexually assaulting numerous other children.
A public records request for the autopsy report of Jade Allsop was denied due to its integral role in the case against Allsop.
Allsop was convicted of first-degree sodomy in 1997 in Oregon.
Vi Batey, manager of the Oregon State Sex Offender Registry, said Allsop did register in Oregon as a juvenile but became noncompliant in 2000.
Allsop was not registered as a sex offender in Texas.
