LAMPASAS - Lampasas Independent School District board members discussed the district's upcoming budget Monday and reviewed its Texas Education Association performance ratings.

The current school district's budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year doesn't account for capital expenditures such as air-conditioning equipment replacement or the purchase of more school buses, estimated at $4 million for the next five to six years, LISD Chief Financial Officer Shane Jones said.

The items were taken out because of the uncertainty of how much money is coming from the state, he said.

Because the district will operate with a deficit for the next year, several trustees asked that LISD administrators bring back the capital improvement plan at a later date - either Monday or Aug. 22 - so the board can prioritize the capital expenditures before approving the budget.

Jones said the state already has warned that school funding will be tight for the next four years.

Nancy Yeary, LISD assistant superintendent, gave the board a rundown of the district's TEA accountability rating, which was recognized.

The rating was an improvement over last year, which was academically unacceptable, with all three elementary schools receiving recognized status, and Lampasas High School and Lampasas Middle School receiving academically acceptable this year.

Superintendent Randall Hoyer congratulated everyone involved in making the accountability rating possible, but said the district will strive for improvement.
