With the rain and clouds finally making way for a little sunshine, another sure sign of the arrival of summer is the sight of posters popping up all over Cove announcing the first Music at the Gap summer concert.

The Music at the Gap Summer Concert series is entering its fourth year and has won several awards for excellence. The concerts, presented by the Boys and Girls Club of Coryell County, serve to fund the club’s music and arts program, which includes a summer music camp held in Kerrville.

The camp is designed to provide youth 13 to 18 years old with a quality music camp offering instruction from professional songwriters, musicians, singers and poets.

“What we’re trying to do is help kids find their own voice and sound,” said Jon Charles, Boys and Girls Club Chief Professional Officer. “Kids involved in music do better in math and sciences. It also gives them an outlet to express themselves.”

Youths are encouraged to bring a musical instrument to camp if they play one, but it is not a requirement. “Even for kids without musical ability, the camp has something to offer them,” Charles said. “They can get involved in the creative writing instruction offered at the camp.”

Registration for summer camp is open on a first-come, first-serve basis and costs $50. Applications are available at the Boys and Girls Club and must be turned in no later than June 29.

Growing in popularity each year, the summer concerts feature a mix of live performances, dinner, dancing and an opportunity for area children to learn firsthand about music, writing lyrics, acoustical instruments and performing during a pre-concert session with scheduled performers.

The first concert in the series is scheduled for June 23 and features Shake Russell and Bill Ward.

According to Mytexasmusic.com, more than 17 million copies of Russell’s songs have been bought after being recorded by the likes of Clint Black, Ricky Skaggs, Waylon Jennings and others.

A review of Bill Ward’s newest CD, from Mytexasmusic.com, reads, “Bill Ward’s self-produced offering is dripping with true folk music packaged in superb arrangements that suit Ward’s voice perfectly. His delivery is masterful and the lyrics are clever and meaningful”.

“All of the Music at the Gap lineup’s have been good,” said Charles. “But the lineup for this summer is exceptional.”

Tickets are $12 at the gate or $10 in advance. Tickets are available at the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce, 204 E. Robertson Avenue; the Boys and Girls Club of Coryell County, 1216 Phil St.; Allstate Insurance, Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation and Music World.

The Music at the Gap series is cosponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Coryell County, the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, the Copperas Cove Parks and Recreation Department, and Time-Warner Cable.
