A dispute over a broken relationship preceded a murder-suicide Monday, Gatesville police said Tuesday.

Police revealed the victims as Carrie Dean Stroope, 42, and the suspected shooter as David Louis Henry, 46, both of Gatesville.

The couple ended a relationship more than a week ago and were arguing about that relationship outside the Coryell County Courthouse on Monday, Gatesville police Chief Nathan Gohlke said Tuesday.

Witnesses told police that Stroope approached Henry's vehicle around 4:20 p.m. Monday. Henry stepped from his vehicle, pushed Stroope to the ground and then shot her with a 9-mm handgun, according to a police news release. Henry shot himself after he ran up the southside steps of the courthouse. Stroope was at the courthouse seeking counseling, which Gohlke declined to elaborate about on Tuesday.

Coryell County Justice of the Peace Larry McDonald pronounced both dead at the scene. McDonald ordered autopsies to be performed at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas.
