COPPERAS COVE — Think you have what it takes to be a school board member?

The Copperas Cove Independent School District is now accepting paperwork for candidates seeking to run for three spots on the district’s board of trustees in the Nov. 5 election.

While filing officially began Saturday, the district’s main administrative office was closed. CCISD begins accepting hand-carried applications today between 7:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.

This year, board members Mike Wilburn, Joan Manning and Doug Cook are up for re-election. They currently occupy Places 3, 4 and 5 on the CCISD board.

Manning, who owns Manning Homes along with her husband, was elected to the board in 1995. She currently holds the position of board president.

Wilburn was elected to his seat in 2007. He is a longtime Cove educator, and worked as a principal at Fairview Elementary School, J.L. Williams Elementary School and Copperas Cove High School. He also served as the district’s executive director of secondary education and technology before he retired.

Cook was elected to the board in 2010. Originally from Arizona, according to his biography on the district’s website, Cook spent more than 30 years in the construction industry before retiring in Cove in 2003. He is also a member of the Coryell County Appraisal District Board and the Copperas Cove Education Foundation.

School board trustees for the Cove district are elected to three-year terms, and there are no term limits. The deadline for candidates to file is Aug. 26. Early voting begins Oct. 21.

The Gatesville Independent School District also will hold elections for its board of trustees Nov. 5. Board vice president Mary Anne Leib and Gerald R. Poe are up for re-election. For more information, go to gatesvilleisd.org.
