COPPERAS COVE — Two Copperas Cove Economic Development Corporation programs are offering would-be startups and business owners a place to get resources.

“We are trying to give them information of value, not just business 101,” said Diane Drussell, the corporation’s business retention specialist.

Drussell oversees the Cove EDC’s Lunch and Learn program and its small-business development workshops. Both work in conjunction with other entities including the Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau and the McLennan Community College Small Business Development Center.

“The workshops are more of the startup businesses,” Drussell said.

The sessions, which are held on the third Thursday of every month, cover a wide array of topics, from creating a business plan to finding lenders to doing research, Drussell said.

“For instance, the business startup class allows people to see the process you should go through to open your own business,” said Steve Surguy, director of the McLennan Community College Small Business Development Center.

Surguy conducts the workshops and gives about an hour of interactive instruction before moving on to a question-and-answer portion.

As part of the workshop program, Surguy also is available in Copperas Cove for one-on-one counseling on the first Thursday of every month.

The lunch program was created to enlighten employers and startups on topics that could impact their operations.

“(The lunches) give information that they may not already know,” Drussell said. “I think businesses get so caught up in their business that they don’t know the important things that affect them.”

Topics for the lunch-and-learns could range from the Affordable Care Act to using social media to proper customer service.

“Some of the topics are on things like customer service,” said Betty Price, Cove chamber president. “That is big. These are topics that will help you succeed.”

Lunch and Learn programs take place on the third Monday of the month.

“The topics are part of their business,” Drussell said. “They need to know it, and they need to know what affects their employees and business.”

The programs are offered at no cost to business owners.
