Larry Smith knows the buzzing sound of clippers and the sharp snips of scissors all too well.

Smith has owned and operated Larry’s Barbershop on South Main Street in Copperas Cove since 1997, but he was an experienced barber before he opened the shop.

“The day I decided to open I was already running a barbershop, when I was working with my mother and she had a shop just down the street,” he said. “So I grew up around the beauty salon.”

Smith and his family moved to Copperas Cove in 1986.

“There was no barbershop within reach,” he said. “But my mother had old clippers at home, and so I started cutting my younger brother’s hair, my friends’ hair, and my own hair and just kept on doing it until it got to the point where I started making money off it.”

He said his business flourished over the years, thanks to longtime customers who spread the word.

“One thing I hear is I do my best when I cut hair, the quality of the cut and the atmosphere of the barbershop,” he said. “Parents are really comfortable leaving their kids here. It’s just word of mouth.”

It’s the family-oriented service that customers enjoy the most, said Keith Emmitt, whose family has been getting haircuts at Larry’s Barbershop for years.

“My dad was sick and he cut my dad’s hair at the old folks home,” he said. “That’s the kind of guy Larry is.”

Emmitt said his father felt better when Smith showed up for the personal haircut appointment. Loyal patrons like Emmitt and his father are like family to Smith.

“You look forward to seeing certain people and catching up on what they did last,” Smith said. “I just feel like I need to be here for the customers and cutting people’s hair, watching the kids grow up. It’s not work to me. I compare it to a lot of other jobs and I’d rather be doing this.”

Smith caters to men and women of all ages. He makes creative designs and drawings in hair when requested by customers.

Larry’s Barbershop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
