Picking up and dropping off people is the business of Cove Taxi, a cab service that has been based in Copperas Cove since 1996.
An 18-vehicle fleet serves Copperas Cove, Killeen and Fort Hood. The company has contended with increasing gas prices and a fast-growing market by hiring drivers who like the job and offer quality customer service.
“I really enjoy what I do,” said Cove Taxi driver Miguel Cordero. “The people I drive around every day, the management, they’re all excellent.”
Originally from Brooklyn, Cordero relocated to Central Texas in 1994 while in the Army and decided to raise his family here after retiring in 1996. He joined the Cove Taxi team 14 months ago.
“Working with Cove Taxi is great, the management is excellent and professional,” Cordero said. “They do a great job of keeping us drivers well informed. If we have a question, they answer it; they make our lives a little more stress-free.”
Driving does have its ups and downs just like gas prices, but it is all about customer service, Cordero said.
“When I first started, business was OK, but now with the rising gas prices, it is a little rougher,” Cordero said. “My customers love my accent, though. They enjoy it.
“My job is not only to drive people around but also talk to them and provide good customer service. They get a kick out of a New Yorker talking with them. I get called Yankee quite a bit.”
Cove Taxi manager and former driver Kysha Edmond-Gray has enjoyed her time with the business.
“This is one of the most laid-back jobs I have had,” Edmond-Gray said, “Most people don’t think about it, but we still have to have great customer service, and I think at Cove Taxi we do a great job at treating our customers nicely and respectfully.”
