The holiday season is about giving, and Maria Oliveras knows how to do just that.

On Monday, when her business, Maria’s Beauty Salon in Cove Terrace Shopping Center, is usually closed, Oliveras opened her doors to host the sixth annual Christmas party for her favorite demographic — senior citizens.

Seniors age 60 and older were treated to their choice of a free hair cut or manicure and a Puerto Rican inspired lunch, accompanied by the sounds of Christmas music.

“I don’t think that there is anyone else here that does what she does for the community,” Lois Willingham, 75, said.

Over the past six years, many of the seniors, like Willingham, have either been referred to Oliveras or met her during her many visits to the Copperas Cove Senior Center. Because she knows how hard it can be for senior citizens to get a great haircut on a limited budget, Oliveras gives free haircuts the last Monday of every month at the center.

Party-goers Victoria Stewart, 66, and Leroy Lemmons, 79, said they met Oliveras at the senior center, but preferred to visit the salon rather than wait to get a haircut once a month.

“I’ve been coming here for a few years,” Lemmons said. “It’s a good deal.”

Seniors are able to receive a haircut in the salon for $5. The contributions made by Oliveras’ business through free and reduced-price haircuts, equates to more than $20,000 annually. Oliveras will make her next move to her new salon at 905 S. Main St. in January. Moving not only changes Oliveras’ physical location, but also takes her from renter to property-owner.
