The Copperas Cove chapter of Altrusa International continued its annual Supply Our Students campaign this August to ensure the children of their town have the tools they need to start school, chairperson Angea Carroll said.

Altrusa, a volunteer women’s service organization, regularly contributes to the community through various service projects, but promoting education is a cause especially close to Altrusa members’ hearts, Carroll said.

Altrusa has been active in Texas since 1930, and began in Copperas Cove in 1991, according to a website. “We’ve been doing the school supply drive for at least 12 years,” Carroll said.

Carroll is a founding charter member of the chapter, which meets twice monthly in Copperas Cove.

“The supplies include all the basics … spiral notebooks, folders, paper, pens, pencils, scissors, rulers and glue,” Carroll said. “The people of Copperas Cove have been very generous with their donations.”

In addition to already-purchased school supplies, Altrusa utilizes money and gift card donations to flush out their stock. The group was able to donate supplies to each campus in the Copperas Cove school district. Typically, there are enough materials for Altrusa to replenish the supplies at midterm.

In the group’s quest to eradicate illiteracy, the Copperas Cove chapter, helmed by president Diane Payne, also maintains a yearly book project. Members provide books annually for students in first, second, and third grades and Head Start.

By regularly donating books and supplies and promoting education, Altrusa hopes to provide a solid foundation for children to build on to become successful adults, Carroll said.
