Blue Santa headquarters opened its doors Thursday at 338 Cove Terrace Shopping Center and began taking applications to provide Christmas for families in need.

To apply for assistance, residents must provide a photo ID, proof of residency, Medicaid or food stamp authorization letter, proof of relationship to the child and a recent income statement. Applications will be taken through Nov. 22.

“This season will prove to be a busy year given the state of the economy,” Kelly Dix said. “Every year we start the program with minimal funding, and every year, we are blessed with enough donations to provide Christmas gifts to approximately 500-600 children in Copperas Cove, Kempner and Pidcoke.”

Gifts and financial donations may be dropped off at various businesses where collection boxes and canisters are displayed. The Blue Santa program will participate in the annual Christmas Parade on Dec. in downtown Copperas Cove. Residents may bring toys and monetary donations to the parade for the Blue Santa elves to pick up. Donations may be mailed to Blue Santa Program of Copperas Cove, P.O. Box 622, Copperas Cove, TX 76522.

The annual Tri-County Toy Run will be held on Dec. 1. Motorcycle enthusiasts that support the program every year will begin their motorcycle ride from the Temple VFW and end at Ogletree Gap Park in Copperas Cove. The toys will be sorted and packed for distribution on Dec. 12.

Blue Santa started as a partnership with Copperas Cove VFW Post 5822, Salvation Army and the City of Copperas Cove, and over the years has evolved to become an independent nonprofit operated by a board of officers.

The organization’s mission is to annually assist families in need with providing Christmas toys for children between the ages of 0 and 14.

Unfair to those who work and still can't afford gifts for their children. Because we make just enough to provide for our kids and don't qualify for Food Stamps but we can't take advantage of this help provided to those who just sit around collecting Food Stamps and get free health insurance.
