Laura Cella, 59, is an adjunct professor at Central Texas College in Killeen. She has lived in Copperas Cove since 1978.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in Minnesota.

What brought you to Copperas Cove?

I was in the military and I lived in the Netherlands for three years before I got sent to Fort Hood. I met my husband here, who was also in the Army, and he decided he wanted to get out and I wanted to stay in. After we became pregnant, I decided I would get out, too.

What do you enjoy most about living in Cove?

I like the small town atmosphere and the friendliness of the people.

If you could change one thing about your life, what would that be and why?

I wish I had more time to travel and see other places. I’ve just been too busy.

How long have you worked for CTC?

I’ve worked at the college for over 10 years. I also worked for the Copperas Cove school district as a math teacher.

What inspired you to become a math teacher?

I’ve always loved the idea of being a teacher, ever since the first grade. After high school, I went to college for a little bit in the teaching program but it was hard for me to afford it. So I joined the Army to get the rest of my education paid for ... and math was always really interesting to me. It’s like solving puzzles and I love solving puzzles.

Are you involved in any community activities, organizations or clubs?

I used to be an active member of the (Copperas Cove) Chamber of Commerce and was on the board of directors. Right now I’m more active just in my church and working and volunteering on behalf of our church in different places. I work with youth. I’ve done volunteer tutoring for young people in school and I’ve done some College for Kids courses at CTC teaching math.

Tell me about your family.

My husband is Jonathan Cella. He is also employed at CTC, as the department chair for the criminal justice protective services department, and he’s also an instructor. Our oldest daughter, Jeana, is an intermediate math teacher in Pennsylvania. My second daughter, Rebecca, is working in College Station, and my youngest baby daughter, Larissa, is also in College Station. All my children are Aggies; they’ve all gone to Texas A&M in College Station.

What is your favorite vacation spot?

My favorite right now is Scotland. My oldest daughter lived there for a couple of years and we went to visit in the summertime. I loved it there, I would love to go back. Another vacation spot we enjoy is Arizona.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

I can’t remember the exact wording but, “You should always do good even when no one’s watching. Do the right thing even if no one knows about it.” My dad was the one who was always pushing us to do what’s right and to always look out for other people and to not make waves.
