School is back in session in Copperas Cove, but not in the usual buildings. Churches throughout the community offer vacation Bible school throughout the summer.

Vacation Bible school dates back to the days when Copperas Cove was founded in the early 1890s. The start of vacation Bible school can be traced back to 1894 when a public school teacher who also taught Sunday school wanted more time to teach children about the Bible. So she started a daily Bible school to teach children during the summer. The first Bible school enrolled 40 students and lasted four weeks.

Today, most churches teach vacation Bible school the length of a week offering half-day or full-day programs. Churches in Copperas Cove schedule their VBS programs on varying weeks to avoid conflicting with one another.
