Library book sale

Isaiah Gray, a Copperas Cove High School junior ROTC volunteer, and Susan Ayres, Copperas Cove Friends of the Library secretary/treasurer, sort and separate books by price Saturday at a book sale hosted by the organization.

The Friends of the Copperas Cove Library’s used book sale Saturday raised $430 to aid the library’s operations.

“The funds will go to support library programs,” said Peggy Fleet, president of Friends of the Copperas Cove Library.

The organization is responsible for helping fund library programs. They also fund other library needs such as the purchase of new furnishings, books and audio materials.

At the book sale, 16 long fold-out tables and dozens of boxes lining the floor were filled with books for sale for as little as 25 cents a piece or six for $1.

“Most of the books here are donations and the rest are outdated or surplus copies from the library’s collection,” Fleet said.

The large quantity of books helped make the sale successful for the Friends of the Library, said Susan Ayres, secretary and treasurer.

“This turned out to be a bigger sale than we anticipated,” she said.

Helping to haul, set up and organize all these books was a small group of Copperas Cove High School junior ROTC students.

“We’re volunteering because it’s the right thing to do,” said cadet major, Isaiah Gray. “As a leader, I feel that I need to be here and set an example for my team.”

Many of the unsold books will be redonated to the community, Ayres said.

“Some of the leftover books will go to the VA hospital, some to the Cove House, and also some to the senior center and two local nursing homes,” she said.

Other books will be sold to provide support of the library, Fleet said.

“We also have a smaller, on-going book cart sale in the lobby of the library,” Fleet said.
