Military Order of the Cooties

Mae Stephens, left, is greeted by clown Garland Cobel during the Military Order of the Cooties’ visit to Hillside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Copperas Cove.

About a dozen Military Order of the Cooties members, dressed as clowns, handed out sweet treats to residents at the Hillside Rehabilitation and Nursing Center last week.

“I’m a member of the Abilene, Texas, (Veterans of Foreign Wars), and I’m also a Cootie,” said Dennis Carmichael, who traveled to Copperas Cove to make the visit. “I now live in Novar, Fla., and am still connected to the organization in Abilene. When I travel, I join in with local groups as they visit different facilities.”

The Military Order of the Cooties is an extension of VFWs. Locally, the group hosts Christmas in June each year at Central Texas Veterans Health Care System facilities in Temple.

“During our Christmas in June celebration, we take wrapped gifts to the veterans, including games, puzzles and slippers,” said organizer Verdean Sharp. For more information about Christmas in June, call Sharp at (254) 547-4472.
