GATESVILLE — The efforts of about 350 youngsters will culminate Saturday when the 2014 Coryell County Youth Fair concludes with the auction of grand champion and reserve champion animals at 5:30 p.m. at Gatesville Civic Center.

More than 800 livestock entries and almost 2,000 home economics entries were on display this week as youths from 4-H Clubs and Future Farmers of America organizations around the county competed.

“We enjoy a lot of support from the schools, the parents and the community as well as the AgriLife Extension Service staff,” said Keith Smart, president of the Coryell County Youth Fair Board.

Fair competition started Saturday with the horse show and dairy goat show Saturday. Other livestock and home economics competitions continued through the week.

The dairy goat show was separated from meat goat competition due to increased interest in the category in recent years, said Brenda Fread, dairy goat superintendent.

More than 20 young people showing 57 animals competed in the dairy goat show this year.
